ENROLL NOW

Experience creating convincing interior spaces using the art studio as the motif and inspiration. Discover how to capture the shapes and tones of a room. The first class session will involve making small drawings and studies of the studio. Students will then paint interior views of the studio, possibly including fellow students in their paintings. This class is open to anyone with intermediate experience using oils, acrylics, or pastels.

Required Supplies

Surfaces:
At least one canvas to work on for each class. Approximately 18x24 inches / 20x24 inches / 24x24 inches, or larger if you’re comfortable working larger. If you're a fast worker and you want to do smallish studies you could also bring a couple of 11x14 inch canvases, or comparable square versions. We will aim to complete one painting over two class sessions, so you will have three paintings to take home from the six-week class.

Drawing:
We’ll start things out by sketching the studio from various angles to help loosen up and find our preferred angle for our paintings. Please bring a sketch book/sketch pad, pencils or drawing charcoal, and a block eraser or soft eraser.

Paints:
I work with and teach from a limited color palette of 7 colors - titanium white; alizarin crimson & cadmium red; ultramarine blue & cerulean blue; and yellow ochre & cadmium yellow light (please note: cadmium yellow light, not medium, which is too close to orange). If you want to bring additional colors, you may do so. Avoid paints with the word "hue" on the tube. They are too weak. If you use turpentine or mineral spirits, please bring the ODORLESS kind, as we will be working indoors and we want to be sensitive to others. (Mineral spirits doesn’t apply to those who choose to paint with acrylics.)

Brushes:
Brands of brushes are not important. Be sure to have at least one Flat or Filbert brush, each measuring at least 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide. Look for brush bristles that are long and flexible. Please: no short, stubby brushes or brushes that are thin enough to paint eyelashes!

Palette:
Palette or a smooth surface big enough to hold your 7 basic colors (see above) and for several piles of mixed paint. Paper or plastic plates are too small to hold your 7 basic colors, plus 2-3 piles of mixed color. My own palette is 12x18 inches, although yours could just as easily be larger or square if you wish. It can be plywood, plexiglas, glass, plastic, foam core board, or whatever you're comfortable working on.

Palette Knife:
Metal palette knife (a.k.a.: painting knife) with a blade about as long as your middle finger and tapering slightly toward the tip.
